The Lion and the Unicorn
by Katy Zeilinger
A long time ago before the rise of man, God decided that there should be one animal to rule over all others. His final choice came down to the brave lion and the wise unicorn. God thought long and hard, but he was unable to come to a decision. Finally he decided to have a race. The winner would be named ruler of all beasts.
The day of the race came, and both the lion and the unicorn lined up at the start. It was a long and arduous path covered with puzzles and traps. Both animals raced their hardest, but in the end the lion won by his whiskers. At the end of the day, the lion was crowned King of Beasts. The unicorn congratulated him, and all the other animals celebrated through the night.
Day after day the lion ruled the lands with the unicorn always by his side to offer his support and guidance. The lion began to wonder if maybe the unicorn was trying to steal his crown. With each passing day the lion’s paranoia grew and grew until he became convinced that the unicorn was trying to steal the title of King of Beasts for himself. Late one night, the lion and all of his brothers crept into the unicorn’s home and slaughtered him along with all his family.
The next morning when God saw what the lion had done, he was devastated. The lion and his brothers had managed to kill every unicorn on earth. God’s decree that the lion would be King of Beasts was irreversible. However, as punishment for their deeds, the lion and his brothers were forbidden to ever hunt again. This is why there are no more unicorns, and why it is only the lionesses who hunt. |
