Pica

by Glenna Luschei

All the people
I didn't thank for my
Pyrex are dead:

the tin recipe box
my ex-husband's mother gave me.
Simple 3" x 5" cards I could never follow.
I gave up on the Singer treadle.

In this recipe for date pudding
I let it cool
just as she typed.

I came to love her pica script
precise, small boned as she.
She typed my master's thesis:
Wright Morris, Nebraska Writer.
She changed the baby’s diaper.

When our anniversary came
she warned,
“Now don’t ask for silver.”

I cast off her message: “Forego
your heart’s desire.”
